AI progress — 4 November 2026
Google will let schools opt out of its classroom AI tools, but according to Ars Technica and the New York Times, schools that do so also lose Google Search. The choice is bundled, so a school that wants no AI has to give up a core service to get it. Elsewhere, Apple opened Siri AI to third-party apps, and a new paper reports a silent training failure in many open-weight checkpoints.
New models and papers
- Near-Zero Token Embeddings Silently Stall Training in Gated Sequence Models — the authors surveyed 291 open-weight repositories and report near-zero input embeddings in 20 of 38 untied gated and hybrid checkpoints, and none in weight-tied models. Why it matters: anyone fine-tuning an untied gated or hybrid model has a specific, checkable failure to look for in the embedding table.
- SpecPilot — a paper on autonomous algorithm discovery and systems optimization for speculative decoding with parallel drafters, asking whether released systems reach the full speedup parallel drafting permits. Why it matters: it targets inference speed in stock speculative-decoding setups; the summary does not give results, so read the paper before relying on it.
- Qwen 3.8 27B on my laptop can interpret model weights, too — Simon Willison tests a local Qwen model against the “Sparks of Weight-Space Programming” paper, whose authors report that frontier models can read and modify raw model weights. Why it matters: if it holds up, weight interpretation is not limited to frontier models and can be tried on local hardware.
New tools and software
- Claude Code v2.1.318 — adds assume_role for the Claude apps gateway on AWS mantle upstreams, an effort option for a mod’s model fork, and a record of your answer when asked to enable session-written mods. Why it matters: teams on AWS can attribute cost per developer across accounts.
- Dependabot version updates support Agent Package Manager — Dependabot now opens pull requests to update agent skills, prompts and instructions managed with APM. Why it matters: agent instructions get the same reviewable update path as code dependencies.
- GitHub Copilot is now available in JetBrains Air — you can delegate coding tasks, guide execution and review results with Copilot in JetBrains Air, via the Agent Client Protocol. Why it matters: Air users can use Copilot as an agent without leaving the IDE.
Overall digest
- Google will let schools skip AI tools, but they have to give up search, too — Google will offer schools AI tools that purportedly do not give away answers; opting out of AI reportedly means turning off search. Why it matters: school IT buyers face a bundled decision rather than a clean opt-out.
- Apple starts giving Siri AI access to third-party apps — with iOS 27.3, developers can integrate Siri AI in all apps, letting it use personal context, natural-language prompts and on-screen awareness. Why it matters: iOS developers can now expose app actions to Siri AI.
- Postman silently auto-installs AI plugins and attempts to share all API data — a user-filed GitHub issue alleges Postman installs AI plugins without consent and tries to share API data; the claim is the reporter’s and is not confirmed here. Why it matters: teams with sensitive API collections may want to check their Postman settings.
