AI progress — 14 October 2026
Google released Gemini 4 Argon on 13 October, a new frontier model available to developers, enterprises and consumers. It reached GitHub Copilot the same day, and Ars Technica reports that the Gemini app and Antigravity rollout is limited to paying users, with API rates discounted 50 percent through November. Elsewhere, Character.ai filed for Chapter 11 as Disney offered $20M for its chatbot technology.
New models and papers
- Gemini 4 Argon — Google’s latest frontier model, offered through the Gemini API and consumer products. Why it matters: anyone choosing a model for coding or agent work has a new option to evaluate, with discounted API pricing through November per Ars Technica.
- LFM2.5-24B-A2B — Liquid AI’s model, pitched for running agents fast and privately on-device. Why it matters: it is a candidate for agent workloads that cannot send data to a hosted API; its quality is not verified here.
- DoSA: Dots Sparse Attention — a method that, the authors say, avoids scoring every key with every indexer head in sparse attention while staying lossless. Why it matters: if the claim holds, it cuts the indexing cost of sparse-attention models without changing their outputs.
New tools and software
- Gemini 4 Argon in GitHub Copilot — now generally available in Copilot for coding, agentic and reasoning tasks. Why it matters: Copilot users can switch to it without a separate Google account.
- Secret scanning blocks Anthropic keys by default — GitHub adds detection for Salesforce, Anthropic and Cloudsmith secret types. Why it matters: leaked Anthropic API keys are now caught at push time without configuration.
- Claude Code v2.1.299 — adds idle compaction in the terminal and a CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_FILE_MENTIONS variable so @ mentions pass paths rather than contents. Why it matters: the variable gives control over what file content enters the context.
Overall digest
- Disney offers $20M for Character.AI’s chatbot tech — Ars Technica reports the offer for technology from a chatbot maker linked to a child suicide; Character.ai has filed for Chapter 11 per its own update. Why it matters: the assets of a major consumer chatbot company are changing hands through bankruptcy.
- IMF warns of an AI share crash — the Guardian reports the IMF sees a threat to global financial stability from a fall in AI share prices. Why it matters: it is an official warning about market exposure to AI valuations.
- Shopify opens its catalog to more AI agents — more agents will be able to browse and buy from Shopify listings. Why it matters: developers building shopping agents get access to a large merchant catalog.
